I often find myself sitting down with my clients, family and friends with this topic inevitably coming up in many different forms. “I don’t know what to do next” “I just don’t feel happy doing what i’m doing now” “there needs to be more”. Some of us can relate; Anxious and lost about where the hell our lives are going. There seems to be a lack of fulfilment. A deficit in purpose.
The important thing to understand about purpose is, our quest to find our own. It is a journey, not a destination. As cringe as that sounds, it’s undeniably true. We as people are by definition ever changing and ever evolving which means our purpose and meaning often follow this trend. We don’t find purpose in a job, in a location or in a person. We find purpose in the pursuit for purpose.
We are the sum total of our experiences and stories. These are some of the most influential components for us finding our purpose. we must look to the past with a grounded and mature lens to be able to extract the themes that will guide us to our next pit stop, which in that moment is our purpose. Looking to the past doesn’t mean dwelling on the past and reliving it, rather it means finding the learnings from it; What am I good at, what gave me the most joy, what had the most direct impact?
